This is an unforgettable hike in the Namibia desert. Let me show you what it takes to complete this iconic hike.
THE WONDERS OF AFRICA
A journey of self- reflection.
Conquering the Fish River Canyon: A Hiker’s Journey
My African journey kicked off from Sao Paulo, answering an unexpected invitation from a friend living in Johannesburg. With little time to prepare, I was soon joining her and an incredible group on one of the most challenging hikes of my life — the Fish River Canyon in Namibia.
Preparation & Packing:
Packing for the Fish RIver Canyon hike with a 15 kg backpack was no small feat! I’ve shared pictures here of the essentials I brought along: medications, food supplies, toiletries, and more. This wasn’t just for the Canyon hike; it had to last across various landscapes and climates. Key items I can’t recommend enough: hiking poles for balance on the steep descent, gaiters to keep the sand out of my boots, and plenty of first aid for blisters — which, unfortunately, became my unwelcome companions along the way.
Starting Point: Ais Ais
The night before our journey began, we stayed at the Ais Ais hotel, which also has a campground. Ais Ais is not only where the hike starts but also where it ends, a full-circle experience that made every step more meaningful. Early the next morning, the hotel shuttled us to the trailhead at the top of the canyon, where we were greeted by a breathtaking view. From the start, I could tell this would be an adventure like no other.
The Descent
The initial descent was steep and intimidating. I quickly felt the weight of my pack — at its heaviest at this point — and regretted my worn-out boots. The downhill trek put pressure on my toes, resulting in painful blisters, and by the end of the journey, I’d lose all my toenails. If you plan to tackle this trail, make sure your boots fit well and consider adding gaiters to prevent sand intrusion.
90 km of Resilience
The full trail is around 90km, though there are some shortcuts along the way. Some routes are worth taking to save time, but others can be even more challenging than the main path. Choosing shortcuts wisely based on your group’s fitness level is essential. The hike itself is no small challenge; it demands both physical strength and mental resilience.
The Magic of the Canyon
As challenging as the trail was, it was equally rewarding. The canyon’s landscape shifted constantly, with towering rock formations, wide-open plains, and stretches of boulders along the river. Each turn presented a new, jaw-dropping view that felt surreal in its vastness. Nights under the stars were an experience of their own — the sky, free from light pollution, was painted with a canopy of stars that seemed almost within reach. Despite the blisters and aches, there was a sense of peace and connection to nature that only a journey like this can offer. The Fish River Canyon pushed me to my limits but rewarded me with memories and sights that will stay with me forever.
The rugged beauty of the Fish River Canyon makes every hardship worth it. From quiet moments beside the river to awe-inspiring cliffs, the landscape is humbling and exhilarating.
